What Can You Do To Prevent A Suicide?

If you are feeling like hurting yourself, it’s important that you keep yourself safe. Try to remember that thoughts about taking your life are just thoughts. You don’t have to act on them, no matter how overwhelming they are or how often you have them. You won’t always have these thoughts.

If your friend tells you he or she is feeling suicidal, take it seriously. Hearing this might make you feel overwhelmed or worried, especially if your friend is very upset or angry, but there are steps you can take to help.

If you think you or your friend is in immediate danger, call 911 and if you are with your friend, stay with your friend until help arrives.

Tips:

  • Postpone any decision: While it may feel like you have to act now, try to postpone your decision. Watch a movie, play a game, call a friend, chat online, exercise, read a book, or listen to music. Take these actions when your negative feelings start to surface. Many people report that by postponing a decision, they found that their lives changed.
  • Tell someone: You can talk to a family member, friend, counselor, teacher, religious leader, or anyone that you feel comfortable with.
  • Call a crisis helpline: Your Life Your Voice at 1-800-448-3000, free 24-hour help
  • Set small goals
