Animal Safari: Binder Park Zoo: In Our Own Backyard

If you love animals, then this is the program for you! Join us for an animal safari where we will be taking a virtual trip to check out and learn about new animals each week. This week we will be visiting the Binder Park Zoo.

Binder Park Zoo, located near Battle Creek, Michigan, is a 433-acre zoo that opened in 1977. It is one of the largest zoos in Michigan, featuring a wide array of animals and plants, including the notable Wild Africa Exhibit. The zoo is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA).

Key features of Binder Park Zoo include:

  • Main Zoo Area: This area houses a variety of animal exhibits, including Australian animal species like dingos and red kangaroos, American black bear exhibit, snow leopards, Canada lynxes, red pandas, black-tailed prairie dogs, and a lemur exhibit. It also includes the Binda Conservation Center with Linnaeus’s two-toed sloths, reptile and amphibian species, and the Conservation Carousel.
  • Wild Africa Exhibit: This permanent exhibit allows animals to roam cage-free in an 18-acre savanna-like setting. It features a one-way loop trail beginning and ending in an African themed village, with an opportunity to feed giraffes at the Twiga Overlook. The exhibit includes reticulated giraffes, common ostriches, Grant’s zebras, addaxes, waterbucks, bonteboks, addra gazelles, marabou storks, and cinereous vultures. The exhibit also has habitats for cheetahs, red-capped mangabeys, Aldabra giant tortoises, colobus monkeys, black mangabeys, red river hogs, and an aviary for African wild dogs and lions.
